Summer of 2017
6/23/2017 - It's June 23rd and I'm back in Winnipeg to play some gigs and do some teaching for the Winnipeg Jazz Festival. Always great to see and hear old friends at Festivals. Last night I got to hear and play with Jimmy Greene and George Colligan at the jam session, ( both former teachers at the U of Manitoba and some of my favorite musicians), as well as listening to the great Buster Williams quartet earlier in the evening and my friend Steve Wilson, one of my favorite alto and soprano players, and he really sounded especially amazing last night! Quincy Davis made the gig along with George Colligan on piano. Tonight I'll be playing with Quincy's group along with Derrick Gardner, Carter Graham and Julian Bradford. Tomorrow I'll be working with some high school saxophone sections, teaching some private lessons, and Sunday I'll be leading a gig at CCFM. It's been a very busy 2 months since we finished up classes here at the U of Manitoba. I did a recording in mid-April with Ken Peplowski that I think is going to be great! I've always had such great admiration for Ken, such an amazing and special player! After that I had a few gigs in NYC, including a nice clinic as part of the CCNY Jazz Festival on May 8th. Then I went to Europe on May 10th. My friend Marc Glass met me at Alicante Airport, and we spent 5 days at his family's house in Calpe Spain- so beautiful there! We were about 7-8 minutes up a steep hill from the beach, which we had an amazing view of. We spent a few days there, we also hiked one day ( got lost on a mountain trying to find our way down, and I had on sneakers with no treads on them... We made it after several funny/painful moments of me sliding into thorn bushes...). Then we drove to Marseille. We had a nice couple days there with his family, including his parents Jeanne and Michel who came and had dinner with us one night. From there I took a train to Torino where I played at their Jazz Festival. I also played in Asti, Valle D'osta, taught in Pavarollo and one more gig in Torino. Thanks to Isabella Rizzo, Luigi Bonafede and Guido Canavese for putting things together and playing great! I had two days at the end of the trip where I spent a day in Pisa and a day in Rome, did some sightseeing, and flew home to NYC on May 30th. Really a great trip! After that I had two nice gigs with Scott Reeves and Bill Mobley in NYC playing the music of Memphis composers- Donald Brown, Mulgrew Miller, et al. Then on Monday June 19th I brought a quartet into Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola with Bryn Roberts, Matt Clohesy and Quincy Davis. We had a great night. It's a great club, it was packed both sets, and there's an amazing view behind the bandstand of Central Park. During the first set, at the end of a ballad, "I Should Care", after torrential rain earlier in the day, we turned around on the bandstand, and there was this amazing rainbow over Central Park! It was incredible. I joked that I hoped it meant that God had decreed that I should get another gig there... We'll see. After this week at the Winnipeg Jazz Festival I'll be playing gigs later in the summer with Alan Ferber's Nonet, Bill Charlap, as well as leading a group of mine at St Peter's church in NYC, before coming back to the U of Manitoba for our annual jazz camp Aug 14th-20th. Have a great summer! Hope to see you at a gig somewhere soon!
