Jazz Improv review of Within Worlds-Brandon Bernstein

His compositions, improvisation, tone, and technical virtuosity set him apart as an elite musician of our time. “The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.”(Albert Einstein).
This is one of the many beautiful and insightful quotes that are displayed in the liner notes of saxophonist Jon Gordon’s newest project release Within Worlds. One thing is for sure; the 1996 Thelonius Monk Competition winner knows how
to experience the unknown as he delivers a masterful performance on his latest release. Gordon is a native New-Yorker who has played with a multitude of jazz giants including Maria Schneider, Clark Terry, Benny Carter, Phil Woods, T.S.
Monk, Bill Mays, The Vanguard Orchestra, Bill Charlap, Mark Turner, Chico Hamilton, and Jimmy Cobb, among many others. Phil Woods states that “Jon is one of the greatest alto players ever.” Within Worlds is a compilation of recordings
of Gordon’s different groups throughout the years that contains all original music. The musicians included on the recording are Ben Monder, Kevin Hayes, Gary Versace, Joe Martin, Bill Stewart, Billy Drummond, and Mark Ferber. The tracks on the album are a collection of various recording dates ranging from 2002 to 2007. Each of the nine original compositions feature different
ensemble formats. The musicians on the album are among the very best of their generation and it shows. One may think that given the complexity of the various ensemble formats, (i.e. some tracks with no bassist, or some with no harmonic
instrument), that it could be hard to retain the listener’s attention; however, this is not the case. The artistic collaboration among these musicians is astonishing. Take for instance the composition “Visit,” featuring Gordon on saxophone, Monder...
